ISHPEMING - Canda Street in Ishpeming will soon get its streetlights replaced with new energy-efficient LED fixtures.
The city's Downtown Development Authority voted at its meeting Monday to pay up to $60,000 for Canda's lighting upgrade.
The decision came after the Ishpeming City Council last week unanimously approved the replacement of more than 3,000 feet of sidewalk and curbing on the north side of Canda Street, Main Street near Canda and a strip of Canda from Maple to First streets, at a cost of roughly $50,000. At the same meeting council members also OK'd an approximately $222,000 invoice for emergency water main repairs already made beneath Canda and Main by Ishpeming contractor A. Lindberg & Sons through the end of May.
City Manager Mark Slown was at Monday's DDA meeting to ask for help in paying some of the costs of the repairs.
Slown told the council last week it wouldn't make sense to make repairs to the sidewalk and curbs without replacing the streetlights at the same time, as the lights are also in poor condition. He said he thought asking the DDA to foot the bill for upgrading the street's lighting was a good way to divide the costs.
The DDA is able to help out because Canda Street falls within the city's designated tax increment financing district. The DDA gets its funding from taxes captured within the TIF district and so it may only spend in that area.
