To the Journal editor:
The U.S. Supreme Court has given legitimacy to the corruption in the political system that now goes for democracy. Thus making the corruption in today's politics legal, by equating money as free speech, and corporations as human entities.
Money now has more rights and power and corporations have more rights and power than people, especially the so-called 99 percent in comparison to the so-called 1 percent or even the 1/10th of the 1 percent who are providing the funding that corrupts the politics of this nation.
Why even call it representative government when it is evident that most are not being represented in the legislative process, that the executive office only gives lip service to the public in the form of words and smiles and name-calling and a judiciary that to favor and the oligarchy, plutocracy, corporatocracy that can be equated with fascism.
Fascism can be defined by the powerful and continuing nationalism, the disdain for human rights, the identification of enemies as unifying cause, the supremacy of the military, rampant sexism, controlled mass media, the intertwining of religion and government, protected corporate power, the suppression of labor, disdain for intellectuals and the arts, the obsession with crime and punishment and fraudulent elections. This is fascism and the state of the nation.
In this, the rich get richer. It is a plutocracy, a government of the wealthy with high economic inequality and low social mobility. Dissent is patriotic, not perpetual wars. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
But these days it is being suppressed. This is supposed to be a sovereign nation we live within, yet secrecy prevails in secret trade talks, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the U.S.-European Free Trade Agreements, which will vastly strengthen global corporate power by further weakening regulations.
If these agreements are allowed to take place sovereignty will be meaningless and we will not be able or allowed to rule our own nation, now allowed to determine air quality, water quality, health issues in face of global trade pacts.
Now there is another trade deal being worked on, in secret, the Trade in Services Agreement, if enacted would roll back new regulations put in place following the recent financial crisis.
