MARQUETTE, MI. - Marian Louise (Strom) Porter, age 87, returned to the loving embrace of the Creator on Thursday, June 5, 2014.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Glen Alden Porter.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynn L. (Porter) Harmacek, of Tewksbury, Mass and many cherished nieces and nephews. She was born in Negaunee, MI. on Feb. 6, 1927, and the youngest of nine children, all of whom predeceased her. Her father died when she only 4 years old.
She was the only member of her family to receive a college degree and went on to receive her Master's degree in Special Education. She was active in restructuring the curriculum for Special Education students to include "life skills." She was influential in establishing group homes for adult Special Needs individuals and working with local businesses in soliciting their support in employment for those students. Marian was kind, caring, compassionate and soft spoken who was actively involved in the Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette. She was a talented seamstress who also excelled in many crafts including baking, candy making, and in her later years enjoyed the theatre. Her loving and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the Swanson Lundquist Funeral Home located at 926 North Third Street, Marquette on Friday June 20th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A visiting hour will be held at the Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette on Saturday, June 21st beginning at 1:00 p.m., until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Pastor Hank Steede will officiate. Interment will follow at the Park Cemetery on Seventh Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Foundation, Bethel Baptist Church, or your local food pantry.
