MARQUETTE - Two Mining Journal staffers were winners in the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors newspaper competition.
Journal Staff Writer Jackie Stark finished in second place in the Best Investigative Reporting category for "Drowning Probe," about the death of a Northern Michigan University volleyball player in a swimming pool on campus.
Journal Sports Editor Matt Wellens took third place in Best Sustained Coverage of a Single Sports Event for his work on NMU's search for a head men's basketball coach.
Journal Managing Editor Bud Sargent was pleased with his staff members' achievements.
"Both of these outstanding writers do great work for us, and our readers," Sargent said. "These are honors that are well deserved."
The Mining Journal competes in Division 1, newspapers with daily circulation under 15,000. Overall, in the three divisions, 30 daily newspapers submitted 1,133 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2013.
