WEST BRANCH TOWNSHIP, MI. - James Meske, age 66, of West Branch Township, entered eternal life Thursday evening, June 5, 2014, at his home, in the loving, comforting care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Born August 19, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Norman and Harriet (Morris) Meske, Jim was raised in Chicago and graduated from high school there. He entered the US Air Force, serving at Scott Air Force Base in St. Louis and then serving in Vietnam for two years. Following his honorable discharge, Jim returned to Southern Illinois, moving back to Chicago in 1983. In 1985, he met Lynn (Grimsby) Olsen in Chicago and on September 1, 1990 the couple was married in Marquette. They returned to Chicago until 1993 when they moved back to Marquette on a permanent basis. Jim was a carpenter by trade and was employed locally by O'Boyle Construction prior to retirement. Jim loved the Upper Peninsula and the time he could spend at camp with family and friends. He was known for his camp cooking abilities with fried chicken being one of his specialties. His family was all important and he enjoyed nothing better than watching his son and grandson race stock cars at the Sands Speedway or cheering for his granddaughter as she honed her volleyball and basketball skills. He nicknamed his grandchildren "booger faces" and his daughter-in-law, Joelle, his "beer fairy". An avid fisherman, Jim was involved in Bass Pro Fishing Tournaments in Southern Illinois in earlier years. His other activities included vacationing with the family in their travel trailer, camping at campgrounds, and being a fan of NASCAR. In 2009, Jim and Lynn purchased a home in Lakeland, Florida, and since then have spent winters there and summers at their camp in West Branch Township. Jim was a member of Carpenters Union Local 1510, the Ishpeming VFW, and Little Lake American Legion.
Jim is survived by his wife, Lynn Olsen-Meske; a son, Ross (Joelle "beer fairy") Olsen of Sands; his grandchildren, the "booger faces", Ross Olsen, Jr and Ellie Olsen; adopted son, Michael Meske of Chicago; two nieces and a nephew in Chicago; and his canine companion, Shadow.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Susan Cooper; and brother, Raymond Meske.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 11, beginning at 5:00 pm until the time of service at 7:00 pm. Rev. Paul Kelto will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cancer Care of Marquette County.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Cancer Care of Marquette County, Marquette Hematology/ Oncology, Dr. Ross Siemers, and Lake Superior Hospice for their compassionate care and many kindnesses extended to Jim and his family during Jim's illness.
