The smell of a campfire, the song of peeping frogs on Lake Bancroft, and not having to wear a jacket outside - it is a beautiful thing to finally experience these things from my backyard. I love this time of year, as I'm sure many of you do, too, and it's been great seeing our community bustling with activity as people get out and about after the long winter.
With summer almost tangible, I am excited to begin a chamber project I have wanted to tackle for some time; I plan to create several videography and photography projects this month, featuring the Champion, Ishpeming, Michigamme, Negaunee and Republic areas. Each city or township will receive its own video, coupled with photography. If you have a specific place you would like to see featured or filmed, your suggestions are welcome.
My education background is in electronic journalism, where I have worked on several video projects, and photography is a hobby and passion of mine, so this project is directly aligned with things I love to do. My goal with this production is to showcase the west end for all that it is - a place for business, an area to raise a family, a vacation destination, a plethora of rich history, and most of all, a place of beauty. Stay tuned for the finished products coming in the near future.
In the meantime, check out our website, www.gincc.org, to watch another great video featuring Ishpeming and Negaunee that will get you in the mood for summer: Marquette County's West End Legacy, produced by Superior Productions.
While on the topic of summer, there are several Chamber events coming up we hope you will partake in.
June 21 is the second annual Town Wide Rummage Sale, taking place throughout the west end of Marquette County. If you haven't already done so, register now at the chamber office or visit our website to download a registration form. We will still accept applications this week.

July 4: Party in the Park West
Aug. 23:?Northern Lights Rave Run
On the Fourth of July, the chamber will again host Party in the Park West from 2-8 p.m. at Al Quaal Recreation Area, featuring numerous bounce houses. We will soon be seeking volunteers for this event, and we would like to split volunteer time into shifts this year. If you are interested in signing up for a volunteer shift, please let us know. We'd be grateful for your help.
Aug. 23 brings the Northern Lights Rave Run 5K and Kids' 1K, taking place at Al Quaal Recreation Area. This is a night-time, glow-in-the-dark race. Run through neon forest trails and finish the race running into a giant tent filled with dance music, a light show, and lots of family fun.
You can run or walk the course; all athletic abilities are welcome. Before the races begin, there will be a picnic festival with games, a chance to win prizes - including glow swag to use in the race - and you'll be able to try to conquer the Mud Plunge quarter pipe obstacle. Make it up the obstacle, and you'll be entered into a grand prize drawing. You can register for the race now online at www.active.com or stop by the chamber office for a registration form.
