Word, song festival planned

MARQUETTE - An area spring Word and Song Festival for the Upper Peninsula will take place on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 at Covington's Bethany Lutheran Church on the corner of M-28 and U.S. 41.

The event will begin with a welcome coffee at 2:30 p.m., followed by worship at 3 p.m. and a group dinner at 5 p.m.

The featured speaker will be the Rev. Paul Kelto of Chatham, who has been the pastor of Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Escanaba for a quarter century.

He also will be part of the men's quartet known as the Gospel Guys. His teammates are Paul Essinger, Bruce HIll and Paul Naasz.

Lay pastor "Pete" Suomela is the local pastor and the master of ceremonies will be the Rev. Les Niemi of AuTrain.

The Word and Song group is the recycled form of Suomi Conference USA, now under a different name. The group has been in partnership in world missions with the Ingrian Lutheran Church of Karelia, Russia, where it has built churches and maintained a seminary in Keltto, Russia.

Leonard to be featured speaker

MENOMINEE - Matthew Leonard will be the featured speaker at this year's "Catch the Spirit Seminar" Saturday, June 7, which is the Vigil of the Feast of Pentecost, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Menominee.

The seminar will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT.

Leonard is an internationally-known speaker, author, and executive cirector of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. A convert to Catholicism and former missionary to Latin America, Leonard is a frequent guest on radio stations around the world and has appeared on E.W.T.N., in Shalom Media Productions, and in Magnificat.

He is the host of the Journey Through Scripture video series and is a featured speaker with Lighthouse Catholic Media. Leonard holds a master's degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville. In addition to writing numerous articles, he is the author of two books, "Louder than Words: The Art of Living as a Catholic and "Prayer Works!"

A $15 registration fee covers all three talks by Leonard, lunch and praise and worship music. Participants are also invited to stay for the 4 p.m. CT Vigil Mass.

Baptist Church welcomes Marx

ISHPEMING - The Bible Baptist Church of west Ishpeming welcomes Pastor Ben Marx as the new pastor of their congregation.

He succeeds Pastor James Hill, who is retiring after 37 years of ministry at the church.

Pastor Ben and his wife Terra have four children and come from Viola, Wisconsin.

Pastor Ben's installation as pastor will be this Sunday at the 11 a.m. service.

2014 graduates to be honored

NEGAUNEE - Immanuel Lutheran Church of Negaunee will honor 2014 high school and college graduates and parents Sunday during worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. and during a reception between services.
