MARQUETTE - A nine-stop Junior Golf Tour has been reinstated for this summer by the Upper Peninsula Golf Association.
After not being held for nearly a decade, according to Marquette Golf Club pro Marc Gilmore, that club will host the first event on its Heritage Course on Tuesday, June 17.
Events range all over the Upper Peninsula, from Sault Ste. Marie and Drummond Island in the east to Houghton and Watersmeet in the west. Tournaments will generally be held weekly, though none is scheduled the week of July 4 and two come during the same week later that month.
Each begins at 9 a.m. and has boys and girls divisions with five age breakdowns for ages 8 to 17. Younger participants will use tee placements further forward, and ages 8-13 play nine holes while older teens play 18.
Cost is $18 per event, which includes greens fees, food and pop, prizes and unlimited range balls. Preregistration is required at least five days before an event at the participating course.
The final event at the Newberry Country Club is the UPGA Junior Finals and requires participants to have played in two previous events in the series.
The top five boys and two girls from Newberry qualify for the Golf Association of Michigan Junior Invitational to be held at Michigan State University's Forest Akers Golf Course from Sept. 20-21.
