MARQUETTE - Except at No. 1 doubles, Marquette had little trouble with a shorthanded Gladstone team in winning 7-1 in a boys high school tennis meet Monday.
The Redmen picked up a pair of defaults and all two-set victories at five other flights to offset the Braves' stauch defense at No. 1 doubles, where Gladstone's Tyler Wells and Jeremy Kadish won a roller-coaster 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 match over Marquette's Alex Brown and Ben Wright.
"Each team had its way in one of the first two sets," MSHS assistant coach Derek Sandstrom said. "But the third set really went back and forth. It was a very entertaining match."
The Redmen dropped just seven games in the other five contested matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory posted by Josh Downs over Spencer Pederson at No. 1 singles.

"I was pretty pleased with our performance," Gendron said. "I wanted to move some people around since this is such a short season this year."
Junior Joel Schramm was a winner, taking his No. 2 singles match over Luke Truscott, 6-4, 6-4. Senior Noah Ackerman was again steady at No. 1 singles, taking an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Jacob Mongrain.
Sophomore Anders Busk rounded out Munising's winning ways in singles, coming back to take his No. 4 match over Nick Lusardi, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

At Norway, Negaunee rolled to an 8-0 sweep of Norway, winning every match in straight sets and only losing five games all day.
"Negaunee is always such a strong team in our conference," Knights coach Allison Maloney said.
The Knights coach noted No. 1 singles Mitchell Pickart with "very long points" against Parker Bowman.
