ELY TOWNSHIP - Freshman Lauren Farley shot 56 to earn medalist honors and lead the Westwood High School girls golf team to victory in the WIN Meet held at Wawonowin Country Club on Monday afternoon.
Farley was five strokes better than runner-up Mallory Erva of Negaunee, which didn't have enough golfers to post a team score.
The Patriots recorded a 32-shot victory over Ishpeming for the team title, 250-282.
"Lauren Farley was one of my highlights, medaling as a freshman," WHS coach Jared Koski said. "Scores weren't great since it was windy and no one's been able to play that much golf this year."
On the boys side, Negaunee senior Dave Renaldi posted 40 to capture medalist laurels by one stroke over Westwood sophomore Connor Mason, but it wasn't quite enough for the Miners as they lost the team meet by three strokes, 178-181, to Westwood.
Breaking 50 for the Patriots were Mason with 41, junior Trevor Burke 43 and senior Trevor Swanson 44; for Negaunee was also freshman Carter Mason with 43 and junior Mike Wilber 45; and for Ishpeming, which didn't have a full team, junior Dominic Suardini with 42 and Matt Kilberg 49.
