MARQUETTE - If Marquette wants to be the best, it has to beat the best.
The Redmen came close to pulling off that feat after falling to Menominee 5-3 in a high school boys tennis meet at home on Tuesday afternoon.
MSHS won the top three flights in singles, but couldn't bolster it with any doubles wins to lose to the team that won the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday facing probably the two other best teams in the Upper Peninsula, Negaunee and the host Flivvers.
"We're getting more good play," Marquette coach Charlie Drury said. "We're gaining more experience all the time with our young doubles teams and we continue to get good play out of our singles."
The Redmen winners included junior Josh Downs at No. 1 singles, a 6-4, 6-2 win over Davey Luplow; senior Matt Collins at No. 2 singles, a 6-2, 6-1 victory past Nate Anttila; and junior Noah Gannon at No. 3 singles, a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Devon Barley.
Menominee scored straight-sets victories in the five flights it won, the closest being at No. 2 doubles, where the Maroons' Chad Schuelke and Nate Gunderson slipped past MSHS juniors Alex Brown and Ben Wright, 6-4, 6-3.

"Brett is playing very steady as a freshmen in his first year of tennis," WHS coach Chris Jackson said. "He is getting better every time he plays.
"Michael made some great adjustments to come back in his second set to close out his match."
The Patriots also got wins from juniors Mitch Messing at Tresten Vitale at No. 2 doubles, juniors Nathen Nelson and Jake Kierzek at No. 3 doubles and sophomore Brandon Benda and senior Tyler Harvala at No. 4 doubles.
