ISHPEMING, MI. - Raymond L. Sundblad, age 86 of 195 Birch St. Ishpeming passed away Sunday May 11, 2014 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility with his family at his side. He had resided at the Medical Care Facility for the past 14 months.
Ray was born in Ishpeming, MI on May 14, 1927 the son of the late Leslie R. and Helen (Locher) Sundblad. He was raised in Ishpeming and was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1945. He went on to serve in the United States Navy, stateside at the end of World War II. Ray then attended Northern Michigan University and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in business, and also attended the University of Wisconsin's school of banking. Ray worked at the Peninsula Bank for 33 years, serving as President and CEO from 1978 until his retirement in 1990.
Ray was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church where he had served on the finance committee. He was an active community member and had served on the boards at the Ishpeming Cancer Society (Cancer Care of Marquette Co), Greater Ishpeming Area Chamber of Commerce, Marquette Co. United Way all of which he had served as president of at one time, Peninsula Bank Board of Directors.
Ray was a member of the Teal Lake Masonic Lodge #202, the Ahmed Shriners, and the Royal Arch Bodies. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post #136, VASA Lodge, Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club, the Ishpeming Elks Club, and the Wawonowin Country Club.
Ray enjoyed picking blueberries, Laurel & Hardy and had a special love for music. He had been active with the Ishpeming City Band, the Ishpeming Alumni Band and filled in with the Negaunee City band playing the clarinet.
Survivors include his wife Colleen (Simons) Sundblad of Ishpeming whom he married on June 21, 1949; 4 sons Ray Sundblad Jr. of Menominee, MI, David Sundblad of Salt Lake City, UT, Stephen Sundblad of Ishpeming, and Charles (Carol) Sundblad of Caro, MI; a sister Helen (James) Lawson of Ishpeming; 4 grandchildren Rachel (Derrick) Carter, Christopher (Cassandra) Sundblad, Eric Sundblad & Caleb Sundblad; 5 great granddaughters; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Aaron Sundblad; a great grandson, Isaac Carter; 4 brothers Stuart, William, Leslie and Robert Sundblad; and a sister Ann Kauppila.
Ray's family will greet relatives and friends from noon 2:00pm on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Memorial services will follow at 2:00pm on Thursday with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
