BIG BAY, MI. - Mary A. Havel, age 81, of Big Bay, entered eternal life Monday morning, May 12, 2014, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, in the loving and comforting care of her family.
Born April 1, 1933 in Hancock, a daughter of Normand and Alice (Douville) McKindles, Mary was raised in L'Anse and was a graduate of the L'Anse High School class of 1951. Following graduation, she enrolled at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, pursuing a degree in education. In 1953, she married Henry Albert Havel, Jr., and together the couple made their home in Big Bay where they raised their five children. A homemaker and mother who loved her family, Mary was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Bay.
Survivors include her five children, Debra (Hector) Galice of Vero Beach, FL, Pat (Sharon Guidebeck) Havel of Lake Independence, Susie (Paul) Kortum of Marquette, Barbara "Baby" (Donald Keihl) LaTour and Tammy Ryerse both of Big Bay; seven grandchildren, Patrick and Timothy Havel, Danielle and Dylan Ryerse, Michael and Cody Kortum, and Nikki LaTour; four great- grandchildren; and special sister, Maureen Havel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry (Tuffy) Havel, Jr. in 2003, and her parents, Norman and Alice McKindles prior to that.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Bay on Thursday, May 15, beginning at 10:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber as celebrant. Inurnment will be made in the Powell Township Cemetery, Big Bay.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff and caregivers in the 200 Wing at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for their wonderful care and friendship. The family would also like to thank Jeremy Hansen and his staff from the Fassbender Funeral Home for their guidance in this difficult time.
