HARVEY, MI. - Robert John Pelkie, age 83, of Harvey, entered eternal life Thursday evening, May 1, 2014, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the loving, comforting care of his family.
Robert was born in Gwinn on January 13, 1931 to Aron and Aune (Hakala) Pelkie and was a graduate of the Gwinn High School where he distinguished himself as a star basketball player. Following graduation, he attended Northern Michigan University pursuing a degree in education. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education and began his teaching career in Farmington, MI and later teaching assignments in Rock and Gwinn where he also coached football. In his retirement, he loved playing golf, snowmobiling, and traveling extensively with his wife, Betty. He loved spending time at his camp on Lake Superior, renovating and repairing, until it eventually became the couple's home. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty (Hockin) Pelkie; his son, Mark (Connie) Pelkie of Minneapolis, MN; nine grandchildren, Josh, Emma, Seth, and Silas Pelkie, Joshua Howard, Jason Hamilton, Joseph, John, and Marty Manitowabi; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Roberts and Marion Wrate; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Heather; and three brothers.
Friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 8, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday morning with Rev. Nicholas J. Cammarata, pastor, officiating. Pallbearers will be Gary, Donny, and Kenny Roberts, and Seth Pelkie. A reception will follow in the church parlors. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery.
