MARQUETTE - One bad inning at Lions Field in Marquette Township cost the Marquette Senior High School softball team a sweep in a 7-1 loss in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Monday.
The Redettes pulled out a 3-2 victory in eight innings in the opener.
"Normally we're a better hitting team, but the Rapid River pitchers had us off balance," said MSHS coach Paul Seibert, whose team hadn't played in nine days.

Game 1's winning run came in when freshman Chelsea Wiggins reached on a fielder's choice, stole a base and trotted home on senior Joy Oberg's double. That made a winner of senior pitcher Senja Liimatta, who struck out 13 in going the distance.
Wiggins scored the other two runs as Marquette (5-6) took a 2-0 lead before RR's Erica Rubick forced extra innings with a solo inside-the-park homer in the seventh.
In the second game, the Rockets broke open a 1-1 game with five runs in the fifth when Dominique Pavlat hit a bases-loaded triple. In the bottom of the inning, the Redettes also loaded the bases but failed to score.

Sophomore Jillian "Bean" Frye had two hits but it wasn't enough as Wiggins was tagged with the loss.
Marquette returns to action for a twinbill in Kingsford on Thursday.
A little support was all the Anderson sisters needed as they pitched the Miners (8-5 overall, 6-0 in Mid-Peninsula Conference) to a doubleheader sweep of Westwood at LaCombe Field in Negaunee on Monday.
Senior pitcher Rosalie Anderson scattered four hits in going the distance in the opener before junior sister Adena Anderson pitched a two-hitter over five innings in the nightcap. Neither walked a batter and each struck out eight.
"Two conference wins are big, even if we weren't as sharp as I'd like us to be," NHS coach Randy Carlson said.
The Miners committed four errors in the nightcap, but senior Alexis Nelson's bases-clearing double in the fourth inning broke open a close game. Adena Anderson had three hits while senior teammates Nicole Richer and Taylor Ring each had two, as did Westwood junior Gabby Hebert.
Negaunee didn't commit an error in the opener and scored six runs in the first two innings to ice the result early. Ring and Rosalie Anderson each had two hits, as did Patriots juniors Katie Rankinen and Samantha Beauchamp.
The Miners host Iron Mountain in another M-PC doubleheader at 4 p.m. today, while Westwood is off until Thursday when it entertains league foe Norway at 4 p.m. in a twinbill.
