MARQUETTE - Timely hitting in the opening game gave way to an old-fashioned power pitching duel in the nightcap as Marquette swept a high school baseball doubleheader against Negaunee on Monday evening.
The Redmen won 8-4 and 2-1 in games played at Gerard Haley Memorial Field in Marquette.
Junior Luke McAuliffe hit a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning of the opener to turn Marquette's 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead before junior Brandon Lotterman struck out the final two Negaunee batters to record the save.

Then in the nightcap, Miners senior pitcher Tyler Jandron and Marquette sophomore Jay Oberg combined to strike out 25 batters before the Redmen scratched out the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.
"Those two pitchers were unbelievable," MSHS manager Todd Koski said. "It's just goes to show the character of this team that they fought and fought to get these two wins."
In the opener, senior Tyler LaJoie singled and stole three bases in the first inning and junior Cole Francis hit a two-run single in the third to stake Negaunee to a 3-0 lead.

But Lotterman hit a clutch two-run single in the bottom of the third before McAuliffe cleared the bases an inning later to make a winner of junior starting pitcher Brett Beauchamp, who went the first 6 1/3 innings.
In Game 2, each team scored in the first inning before nothing but goose eggs went up until the bottom of the seventh.
That's when Lotterman led off with a single and was replaced with sophomore pinch runner Jake Phillips, who moved to third on an infield single and error off the bat of senior Brad Brow before scoring on the errant pitch.
Jandron struck out 15 in six-plus innings of work, walking three and allowing four hits. Oberg rang up 10 Ks while surrendering two walks and five hits.
Jandron knocked in the Miners' only run after LaJoie singled and stole two more bases.
