ISHPEMING - The Wesley United Methodist Church of Ishpeming is sponsoring the fifth annual Project Feed a Neighbor food drive to restock the pantries at the Ishpeming Salvation Army and the St. Vincent de Paul stores in Ishpeming, Negaunee and Republic.
Volunteers distributed bags door to door throughout Ishpeming and Negaunee on Saturday, and volunteers will collect the nonperishable food donations that will be left curbside this Saturday.
The project is supported in Negaunee by Mitchell United Methodist Church, working in concert with the Negaunee Ministerial Association churches.

In addition, Ishpeming's Pioneer Kiwanis group will be helping to conduct the food drive in the Republic, Michigamme and Champion areas, and volunteers from the Tilden Township Hall will conduct the drive in the National Mine area with the help of Faith Lutheran Church and Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Project coordinator Dick Derby said that he has visited with the staff members at St. Vincent de Paul, and they expressed to him the need to refill the food pantries is as great, if not greater, than it's ever been. This is due to the long winter the U.P. has endured, which has caused many families to make some difficult decisions over the past few months.
"It's important for everyone to consider doing their part," he said. "When we have so many volunteers running Project Feed a Neighbor, the success of the project really depends on the generous response from the community.
"We've always had a community that has responded to the needs of its neighbors, and this is as good a time as any to continue that generous spirit."
Collection bags for residents are also available and food items can be dropped off at St. Augustine Church, Republic United Methodist Church, Bethany Lutheran Church, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Sacred Heart Church, Woodland United Methodist Church, Summer Place, or TruNorth Credit Union.
