ELY TWP, MI. - Roy T. Korpi, age 83, of 1848 Co. Rd. CZ, Ishpeming, passed away on April 9, 2014 at his home in Ely Township.
Roy was born January 20, 1931 in Tilden Twp. the son of the late Waino S. and Senia (Franti) Korpi. Roy was a graduate of the National Mine High School, Class of 1948. He served his country in the United States Army as a Radio Operator during the Korean War.
Following his service time, he returned to this area and was employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. at the Republic Mine as a kiln operator, and retired from the Tilden Mine after over 30 years with the company.
Roy enjoyed fishing, especially for Lake Trout on Lake Superior out of Marquette. He also enjoyed time spent at his hunting camp south of Ishpeming. In his younger years he passed his winters by snowmobiling, and more recently loved shoveling the snow and ice in the winter months. Roy always looked forward to the annual family picnics in the summer months.
Survivors include two sisters Marlene Anderson and Donna (Earl) Knutson and a brother Ronald Korpi all of Ishpeming, 3 aunts - Elsie Kantola, Aileen Johnson and Laina Partanen all of Negaunee, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Shirley, brothers Norman, Melvin and Calvin Korpi, sisters-in-law Marion Franti, Bernice Korpi and Gail Korpi, and a brother-in-law Ronald Anderson.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 11am on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate.
Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services at the Ely Township Hall.
The family asks that memorials be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church in Roy's memory.
