SKANDIA, MI. - Helen Dorothy Kauppila, age 93, former Skandia resident, entered eternal life Monday evening, April 7, 2014, at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.
Born August 26, 1920 in Marquette, a daughter of George William and Harriet Mary (Jennings) Denny, Helen was raised in Marquette. In August of 1939 she married Eli Matthew Kauppila and, for many years, the couple served as foster parents to a number of children. Throughout the years, Helen worked at a variety of jobs, as a housekeeper for various people in Marquette, at the former Marquette Dress Factory, as an aide at the former St. Luke's Hospital, and then for a time as a lab research assistant at the Department of Natural Resources.
Helen had been a Yalmer area resident since 1988. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and hiking in her earlier years. She also enjoyed her pets, raising birds in her home and taking in animals that would, otherwise, have no other home.
Helen was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Eli Matthew Kauppila on May 31, 1978; by her grandparents, George and Alice Denny and Richard and Harriet Jennings; by her sisters, Doris Swanson and Nellie Swanson; and brothers, John "Jack" Denny and William George "Bill" Denny.
A graveside service will be held at a later date and will be announced.
