MARQUETTE - Michigan State Police from the post in Negaunee Township will host a "Coffee with a Cop" event Friday morning in Marquette Township.
Troopers invite community residents to attend the event at 11 a.m. at Culver's on U.S. 41 West. "Coffee with a Cop" provides an opportunity for members of the community to ask questions and learn more about the department's work in Marquette County neighborhoods.
"We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our officers," said 1st Lt. Robert Pernaski, commander of the Negaunee post. "These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships."
Troopers said the majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some residents may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street, police said.
"Coffee with a Cop" breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.
