To the Journal editor:
In March 10 letters to the editor, Mr. Potila pointed out some lack of understanding in Mr. Grobar's March 2 letter, in regards to where we are in evolutionary theory.
I am neither a Bible theologian nor a scientist. However, in regards to how humans were created,I don't agree with the theory of evolution. Many things evolve over time as things are continuously changing.
Using a Webster's dictionary, let's define the meaning of the following words.
Evolution - a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler, or worse to a higher, more complex, or better state: growth. In my opinion, things can and continue to be evolved. For example, our national debt has evolved from millions into trillions of dollars.
Science - knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method. I believe science is a very useful tool when factual data is studied and tested using a scientific process.
Universe - a systematic whole held to arise by and persist through the direct intervention of divine power. I believe, the direct intervention of divine power is what the Bible teaches. Genesis 1:1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now back to my problem with Mr. Potila's statement: "I'm not sure why many Christians are so adamant that evolution does not work." In my opinion, no Bible-believing Christian would agree with evolution as it conflicts with the teachings of God and Jesus Christ in our Bible.
In many highly debated cases (how old is the earth or the big bang theory), evolutionary theory is based on theories and not facts. On the other hand, my Christian beliefs are based on faith in the Bible and trusting in our salvation through Christ Jesus.
Mr. Potila also stated, "I also don't understand why evolutionary theory and religious beliefs should be at odds." I hope I cleared up that misunderstanding for you.
It's a shame our public schools refuse to teach both the evolutionary theory as well as creation from the Bible. How soon we forget our great country was founded on Christian beliefs.
For those interested in doing some research, God's creation is explained in the book of Genesis in the Bible.
