HARVEY, MI. - Evelyn E. Luoma, age 86, of 101 Briarwood Drive, Marquette,entered eternal life Tuesday morning, March 18, 2014, at her home in the comforting care of Lake Superior Hospice.
Born December 21, 1927 in Marquette, a daughter of Larry and Aili (Kamppinen) Luoma, Evelyn was raised in Marquette and graduated from the J.D. Pierce High School in 1946. On September 6 of that year, she married Howard Beauchamp and together the couple established a home, while Evelyn worked for Michigan Bell as a switchboard operator until 1951. In 1950, the couple welcomed their son, Gary. The family relocated to Long Beach, California, with Howard seeking work as a TV repairman, while Evelyn began a seven year employment with Pacific Tel & Tel. The couple divorced and Evelyn became a single mother for eight years before she met and married Dan Kalkauski in 1961. In 1962, she and Dan welcomed another son, Jordan, into the family. Evelyn continued working at the Harriman Jane Medical Clinic in communications for eleven years, then at St. Mary Medical Center for another eleven. Dan and Evelyn later divorced and in 1990 Evelyn retired. Following 40 years in California , and missing the Upper Peninsula, Evelyn returned to Marquette in 1992. Throughout the years, Evelyn enjoyed a variety of hobbies and special interests, including handcrafts such as sewing, crocheting, making porcelain dolls, and gardening, She loved animals and was known to be quite the decorator, always trying something new with her home.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Gary D. (Sheila) Beauchamp of Grants Pass, OR and Jordan F. (Jeanie) Kalkauski of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Aimee (Tyler) Level, Dean (Carrie) Beauchamp; step grandchildren Audrey and Jesse Ojeda; great-grandchildren, Caleb Davis, Madeleine Level, Wyatt Level, Emma Kate and Cameron Beauchamp; step great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Isabel, and Damien Ojeda; her brother, Ron Luoma of Marquette; several nieces and nephews; close friends, neighbors, and caregivers, Tom and Kay Johnson of Harvey. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by sisters, Anne Marie Robinson and Ruth L. McGlynn; and a brother, Robert W. Luoma.
Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Saturday, March 22, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Roger Kangas will officiate. A reception will follow in the reception area located at the funeral home. Interment will be made in the spring at the Park Cemetery.
