NEGAUNEE, MI. - Gary Clayton Dunstan Sr., age 63 of Negaunee passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 after battling a lengthy illness.
Gary was born May 21, 1950 in Negaunee to Shirley (Polkinghorne) & the late Arthur Dunstan. He graduated from Negaunee High School, class of 1968 and attended Northern Michigan University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Gary served his country during Vietnam.
Gary worked as a plant repairman for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 29 years retiring in 2000. Gary was very active with the V.A. Romo V.F.W. Post 3165 where he served as Commander and was the Adjutant for 40 years. During retirement Gary spent his time with family and friends and volunteered his time with the State of Michigan as a campground host at Van Riper State Park. He was a member of Friends of Van Riper. While camping, he enjoyed playing cards and sitting around a campfire telling stories.
Gary is survived by his wife Carol (Connors) Dunstan, whom he married on August 23,1975, his mother Shirley Dunstan of Negaunee, 2 children: Gary (fiance Marcie Miller) Dunstan Jr. of Negaunee, Alisha (Brian) Young of Ishpeming, a brother David (Lynn DeLoughary) Dunstan of Negaunee, 2 grandsons: Bryce & Brayden Dunstan and daughter in law Terri Dunstan of Negaunee.
Gary was preceded in death by his father Arthur Dunstan.
Gary's family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00-6:00pm on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where a memorial service will be held at 6:00pm with Rev. Kenneth Lahners officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bryce, Brayden, Dave, & Gary Dunstan Jr., Brian Young, Roy Tonge and Bill Haupt. Military honors will be accorded by the V.A. Romo V.F.W. Post 3165 and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.
