MARQUETTE, MI. - Joseph W. "Doug" DeMarse, age 92, of Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday evening, February 25, 2014 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
Joseph was born February 24, 1922 to Frederick and Alvina (Beaudry) DeMarse and was raised in Marquette. He joined the Army in May of 1943, serving as a Medium Tank Driver with the 1st and 12th Armored Divisions in the European Theater of Operations, which included Joseph's participation in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns.
Following his dis- charge in 1946, he became employed as a deckhand with the Cleveland Cliff Steamship Company traveling on the Great Lakes. Following his employment as deckhand, Joseph returned to the Upper Peninsula where he met his future wife, the beautiful Arlene Miner.

The couple established their home and began raising their children in Marquette. Joseph was employed with Cliff Dow for a number of years before taking a position as a pipefitter with the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad, where he remained employed until his retirement in the early 1980's.
In their spare time, Joseph and Arlene enjoyed many camping trips as well as traveling, including trips to Hawaii, Florida, and California. At one point, the couple lived in California where they managed an apartment complex for a year. Joseph was an avid cribbage player and enjoyed his yard work and keeping a garden, which included tomatoes and potatoes. He was a kind, loving, hardworking, dedicated family man.
Survivors include his daughters, Penny White of Osprey, Florida and Jackie (Marty) Pogue, of Marquette; his grandchildren, Chase White of Bremerton, Washington, Shayle Cain (Danny Petrocik) of Palmer, Kendall Pogue and Breanna Pogue of Marquette; great grandchildren, Tanner, Tyler, Keira, Landyn; nephews, Wayne DeMarse of Big Bay, Jack (Norma) and Ron (Kim) DeMarse of Marquette; a niece, Mary DeMarse of Marquette.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Arlene; a brother, Earl (Margaret) DeMarse, Hugh (Norma) DeMarse, and Donald DeMarse; nephews, Jerry DeMarse and Donny DeMarse; a niece, Barbara Roy
Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Monday, March 3, from 4:00 pm until the time of service at 5:30 pm. Chuck Tooman, Lake Superior Hospice chaplain, will officiate. Veteran's honors will be accorded by members of Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion. A reception will follow in the reception area located at the funeral home.
