Prep skiing: Marquette boys claim U.P. title at Ripley

HOUGHTON - Dominating both the slalom and giant slalom, the Marquette Senior High School boys ski team successfully defended its Upper Peninsula title Thursday at Mont Ripley.

The Redmen totaled 21 points in the U.P. Ski Championships to easily outdistance runner-up Ironwood, which posted 74.

Iron Mountain-Kingsford placed third with 82 points, while Houghton-Hancock had no team score.

Luke Johnson led the way for the Redmen. He won both the slalom (1:23.60) and GS (1:01.36).

Marquette claimed the top five spots in the slalom, with Dylan Larson (1:24.69), Nathan King (1:25.48), Jacob Mackey (1:27.42) and Matt Anderson (1:27.69) finishing 2-5, respectively behind Johnson.

Nick Weber (second, 1:01.40), Anderson (third, 1:02.31) and King (fifth, 1:03.72) followed Johnson in the GS for Marquette.

In the girls' meet, Houghton-Hancock took top honors with 40 points. Marquette came in second with 56, followed by Iron Mountain-Kingsford (91) and Ironwood (123).

Gabby Gencheff claimed both the slalom (1:26.84) and GS (1:02.53) titles for the Redettes. Teammate Hanna Johnson finished third in the GS (1:04.37) and fourth in the slalom (1:31.43).
