Prep boys basketball roundup: Negaunee avoids letdown, doesn’t overlook Gladstone in 71-57 victory

By Ogden Sports Staff (sports@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

NEGAUNEE - The Upper Peninsula's No. 2 Class ABC boys basketball team didn't suffer from the dreaded letdown game on Tuesday night.

Playing four days after an emotional win at nearby rival Ishpeming and two days before a much anticipated showdown at No. 1 Marquette, the Miners efficiently dispatched of Gladstone at home, 71-57.

"I was fairly pleased with how we came out, with this being a nonconference game between Ishpeming and Marquette," NHS coach Mike O'Donnell said.

The key to this win was the second quarter, when Negaunee held a 22-6 edge to take a 41-19 halftime lead.

"We played a nice second quarter, but we didn't do anything special," O'Donnell said. "We just clamped down on them defensively after they hit some shots in the first quarter."

The Miners' Eric Lori led all scorers with 21 points, while fellow senior guard Tyler Jandron added 14 points, nine assists and five steals. Another guard, junior Robert Loy, scored 13 points while sophomore forward Jay Lori pulled down seven rebounds.
