NEGAUNEE - Despite a top-notch performance by Negaunee's Emilie Thorvaldsen, Marquette won a high school gymnastics dual meet by 3.6 points over the Miners on Monday, 116.05-112.45.
Thorvaldsen, a sophomore exchange student from Norway, scored 33.65 points to win the all-around. Marquette's Mikayla Mitchell was second (30.80) and her teammate, Jaryn Stewart was third (30.35).
"We're creeping closer to Marquette, because this was closest we've come to them this season," NHS coach Eyre Becker said about Senior Night, where five Miners were honored.
Thorvaldsen won the vault, bars and balance beam while placing second to Mitchell in the floor exercise. Mitchell also tied for second place in the vault with teammate Dinele Stewart.
Dinele Stewart added a runner-up finish in the bars, while Jaryn Stewart was second in balance beam and third in floor and bars. Another Redette, Taylor Hopper, was third in balance beam.
