MARQUETTE - Gwinn used its superior size to break open a close game in the third quarter and defeat Westwood, 61-51, in a high school boys basketball game played Monday.
The Modeltowners, who improved to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in the Mid-Peninsula Conference, also featured balanced scoring with four players breaking into double figures.
Seniors Owen DeVooght scored 16 points, Justin Nyquist 15 points and Kylor Skinner 14 points, while junior Justin Beauchamp added 11 points to keep Gwinn in third-place in the M-PC.
For Westwood (4-7, 3-4), senior Justin Luke notched team highs of 20 points and eight rebounds, while junior Mitchell Messing pitched in with 13 points.
"We only had one 3-pointer, but we were able to pound it inside because our size was a factor," Modeltowners coach Darren Sinnaeve said. "Give Westwood credit for how hard they played. Physically, they kept coming at you, coming at you and coming at you.
"You see the playing style that (coach) Ryan Reichel excelled at in high school and college."
