NEWBERRY - Four Ishpeming wrestlers reached district championship matches and advanced on to the regional round in the MHSAA Division 4 individual wrestling tournament held in Newberry on Saturday.
Wrestlers had to finish in the top four in their weight division to continue on at tournaments that generally included around 16 teams.
Two Hematites were crowned district champions while the other two qualifiers were runners-up.
"I'm really excited to have had four wrestlers make it to district championship matches," IHS coach Tim Hares said.
The four D4 qualifiers advance to the Rogers City regional on Saturday.
Senior Jordan Tousignant won the 145-pound division, recording three pins among his four wins and taking a 10-6 victory in the district title match against Jacob Weslin of Iron Mountain. That match marked Tousignant's 100th victory of his four-year high school career.
Junior teammate Johnathan Willey won the 135 division, beating IM's Corbin Henkle 10-4 in the final.
Like Tousignant, Willey went 4-0 Saturday as he recorded two pins.
Two more juniors were runners-up, Alec VanHorn at 285 and Nate Meyer at 160. VanHorn was pinned by Cory Gillette of Rudyard to end his day after he went 3-1 with two pins, while Meyer was pinned by Sam Hovie of Charlevoix at 3:12 and amassed a 2-1 record.
Hares said that Willey is looking to the return to the state finals from last year, while Tousignant and Meyer were regional qualifiers in 2013.
