MARQUETTE, MI. - Bernard Fred "Bernie" Johnson, age 90, of Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday evening, February 4, 2014, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
Bernie was born May 4, 1923 in Negaunee, a son of Werner and Sofia (Larsson) Johnson, and was raised in Negaunee. He was a 1941 graduate of the Negaunee High School and, following graduation, worked part-time jobs until his induction into the US Army Air Force in February 1943. Due to health-related issues, Bernie was honorably discharged in June 1943 and, desiring to still serve, went to work in the defense factories in Ann Arbor during World War II. He entered an Orthotist program under the GI Bill and did his apprenticeship with J. L. Schillinger in Marquette, eventually becoming a certified orthotist, and making braces for numerous patients during the polio outbreak. He later was employed as a clerk at the US Post Office in Marquette from where he retired in 1983. Bernie enjoyed woodworking, creating numerous pieces of furniture throughout the years and involving himself in many building projects. He was a member of the Laestadian Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, where he served as a lay speaker, was a member of the church board, and volunteered his services to many church related projects. He and wife, Esther, enjoyed traveling and spending time with their grandchildren and other family members.
Survivors include his wife, Esther A. Johnson, whom he married October 20, 1956; a daughter, Kathleen (Mike) Simonson of Maple Grove, MN; four sons, Walter Johnson of Brooklyn Center, MN, Kenneth (Jennifer) Johnson of Marquette, Ronald Johnson of Gladstone, and Daniel Johnson of Fayetteville, NC; his grandchildren, Kennan Johnson, Erik Johnson, and Alex Murchie; sisters-in-law, Taimi Johnson of Warren, MI and Joan Johnson of Columbia Heights, MN; several nieces and nephews; and numerous brothers and sisters in faith.
In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard, Arthur, and Werner "John" Johnson and Werner's wife, Saimi.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Laestadian Lutheran Church, 567 Washington Street, Ishpeming, on Friday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Saturday beginning at 10:00 am. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 8 at 11:00 am with Walter Lampi officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Burial will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be Daniel Rintamaki, Steve Laiho, Michael Kuopus, Peter Kuopus, Ken Jacobson, and Alan Wikman.
