Art programs receive grants

MARQUETTE - The Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission and the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs recently awarded 11 non-profit organizations in the Central U.P. a total of $28,960 for support of community art programs in 2014.

Local groups receiving Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Art Minigrants include:

- Superior Alliance for Independent Living - SAILing With the Arts. The project will enhance and broadenSAIL's arts and crafts programs to individuals with disabilities through illustration, painting, recycling, upcycling, pottery, musical arts and more. The organization will receive $4,000.

- Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University - Cabin Fever Days. This program involves two months of art and culture programming in Marquette providing artistic inspiration and a chance for people to interact with each other through dance, music, crafts and other types of performances. The organization will receive $2,471.

- Marquette Maritime Museum - Michigan Lighthouse Alliance Conference. The museum director will attend the Lighthouse Alliance Conference to benefit the preservation, promotion and protection of the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse. The museum will receive $1,060.

- Liberty Children's Art Project - organizational development. The director will travel to Seattle to consult with the director of Coyote Central, a well established nonprofit organization for the art enrichment of youths, to build a strategic plan. The organization will receive $1,500.

- Marquette Alger Regional Educational Service Agency - Learning in the Arts for All. Conduct professional development workshop designed to increase the abilities of professional artists living and working in Marquette and Alger counties to teach their art to students. The agency will receive $1,500.
