ISHPEMING, MI. - Calvin R. Korpi, age 84 of 1848 Co. Rd. CZ Ishpeming (Ely Twp) passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had been a resident for the past year.
Calvin was born June 16, 1929 at home in Tilden Township to Waino & Senia (Franti) Korpi. He graduated from National Mine High School, class of 1947. Calvin worked for Cleveland Cliff Iron Company starting in 1950 at the Mather A Mine, later worked at the Humboldt Mine and retired in 1989 from the Empire Mine as a diesel mechanic.
Calvin was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed feeding birds, fishing, hunting, trapping and woodworking. He was a Jack of Trades.
Calvin is survived by 2 sisters: Marlene Anderson and Donna (Earl) Knutson, 2 brothers Roy Korpi and Ronald Korpi all of Ishpeming along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant sister Shirley, brothers: Norman and Melvin Korpi, sisters in law: Marion Franti, Bernice Korpi and Gail Korpi and a brother in law Ronald Anderson.
Private funeral services will be held on Monday, January 27th at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Memorial considerations may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church, 333 E. Ridge St. Ishpeming, MI 49849 in memory of Calvin Korpi.
