County board recognizes Pigs-n-Heat fire relief fund

MARQUETTE - The Marquette County Board recognized the efforts of the Pigs-n-Heat Fire Relief Fund Tuesday in unanimously passing a proclamation acknowledging the organization's merits and achievements.

"The Marquette County Board of Commissioners commends and encourages the Marquette County Pigs-n-Heat Fire Relief Fund for their 31 years of service to Marquette County citizens victimized by the ravages of fire," the proclamation states.

According to the proclamation, in the winter of 1984, police and fire personnel were looking for a way to raise money to aid a family whose home had been burned that year. Officials decided to create a charity hockey game between firefighters and police officers, with the proceeds directed to assisting fire victims.

A tradition has since developed with businesses donating thousands of raffle prizes, media sponsoring and publicizing the event, county residents purchasing tickets and governmental agencies providing logistical support, according to the proclamation.

Since 1984, a total of $350,000 has been distributed to individuals and families experiencing residential structure fires. The fund supports fire victims with three days of free motel accommodations and a monetary contribution for each person affected to purchase clothing and essential items, the proclamation said.

Tickets for the annual game are $1.
