The Upper Peninsula has its own sports and fun that beckon, when winter grips the region.
Local organizations do an outstanding job making sure visitors and residents alike have enough to do until the snow thaws and the sun returns.
We'd like to applaud and call attention to events like this past weekend's Heikki Lunta winter fest and this coming weekend's Noquemanon Ski races for giving us a reason to leave the warmth of our houses and join in the fun and games.
Local events like these and many others provide a chance for people to get out and enjoy a social gathering surrounding something as special as Trenary's Outhouse Races or the Arctic Color Blast.
There are also a lot of thanks to be given to the organizations which plan and sometimes fund these events.
The Lake Superior Partnership, the Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Chamber of Commerce, Peter White Public Library, Marquette General Hospital, as well as numerous local businesses and other organizations, all deserve applause.
While we know that not everybody skis or snowmobiles or ice fishes, winter recreation provides a great opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise.
