ISHPEMING - Unable to sink shots near the basket, the Ishpeming High School girls basketball team wound up losing to visiting Negaunee, 32-30, in a Mid-Peninsula Conference game Monday night.
"We missed 22 layups or putbacks in the game," IHS coach Tom Graves said. "That was the difference. We had so many opportunities to score, but just couldn't finish."
He added the Hematites had three straight looks at the basket at the end of the game, but failed to connect.
"We just couldn't put it in," Graves lamented.
Rosalie Anderson led Negaunee (7-4 overall, 6-1 M-PC) with 12 points. Aleda Johnson hauled in eight rebounds.
Jessica Spencer tossed in 10 points and Gabby Croley grabbed 12 boards for Ishpeming (7-3, 4-1).
"Negaunee likes to shoot 3s and we held them scoreless from beyond the arc," Graves said. "I like our defensive effort. We just couldn't execute offensively."
Ishpeming won the JV contest, 44-34.
Superior Central 49, Mid Peninsula 43
At Eben, seniors Teslyn Tyner and Vanessa Freberg scored 17 points apiece to pace the host Superior Central in a Central U.P. League game.
Freberg added 11 rebounds as the U.P. Class D No. 3-ranked Cougars improved to 11-1 overall and 8-0 in CUP play.
"Mid Pen came to play," SC coach Greg Trowbridge said. "They did a good job trying to take our inside game away.
"Teslyn got hot in the first half with four 3-pointers (en route to a 30-19 SC lead at the half)."
Hunter Branstrom tossed in 15 points and Sarah Hanson added 14 for the Wolverines (6-8, 3-5).
"The girls just dug deep in the last couple of minutes," Trowbridge said.
Mid Pen won the JV game, 42-36, in double overtime.
Ewen-Trout Creek 46, Republic-Michigamme 38
At Republic, the host Hawks couldn't overcome the 1-2 offensive punch of Taylor and Molly Niemi of E-TC.
Taylor Niemi poured in 20 points and Molly Niemi added 19 as E-TC improved to 2-8 overall.
Elizabeth Kangas tossed in 17 points and Kayla DuMoulin chipped in 11 for R-M (0-7).
"Our effort was there and we did some good things," R-M coach Matt Davidson said. "But (E-TC) made some shots down the stretch and we didn't.
"We also went just 3 of 11 from the free throw line."
