MARQUETTE - Superiorland is well represented in today's Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association boys and girls prep basketball polls as four local teams are ranked in each.

The Marquette Senior High School boys' squad (8-0) is again a unanimous No. 1 pick on the Class ABC list. Coach Brad Nelson's club picked up the maximum 25 poll points.

Negaunee (8-1), whose only loss was to Marquette (51-40) on Dec. 19, continues to hold down the No. 2 slot. The Miners of coach Mike O'Donnell have 20 poll points.

Like last week, Ishpeming (4-2) is ranked No. 5. Coach Jeff Olson's team collected four poll points in balloting by select UPSSA members.

In Class D, coach Dan Waterman's Munising Mustangs moved up a notch to No. 2 with the help of a 57-44 win Jan. 13 over previously fifth-ranked Carney-Nadeau. Munising has 15 points.

In the girls' balloting, Marquette (14-0) continues to be the top-ranked team in Class ABC. Coach Ben Smith's Redettes - who will play just once this week at home Friday against Menominee - are a unanimous UPSSA selection.

L'Anse (7-1), which suffered its first loss of the season 50-49 last Tuesday at Negaunee after beating host Ishpeming 58-56 the night before, is ranked No. 4. The Hornets of coach Shawn Hendrickson collected 11 UPSSA points.

In Class D, Superior Central (10-1) is again ranked No. 3. The Cougars of coach Greg Trowbridge collected 16 poll points.

Moving into the top five is coach Matt Mattson's Munising Mustangs (8-2). The team earned six points.

In state Associated Press balloting, also released today, on the boys side, Negaunee is fifth in Class C, Munising is 10th in Class D and Marquette made the others list in Class A.

For the girls, Superior Central is ranked No. 5 in Class D, while Marquette in Class A and Munising in Class D are both second on the list of schools also receiving votes, the equivalent of being voted 12th on those lists.
