EBEN - Outscoring Brimley 22-8 in the second quarter, the Superior Central High School girls basketball team went on to post a 55-49 non-conference win over the visiting Bays Saturday.
"We played (Friday night) and we were without one of our starters - Brianna Emard - with a sore knee," SC coach Greg Trowbridge said.
"We started out slow and had to figure out how to play (Brimley's) big girl, 6-3 Hana Vesela of the Czech Republic."
He said Brooke Pasanen sank three 3-pointers in the second quarter surge, Teslyn Tyner one and Vanessa Freberg knocked down 4-of-4 free throws.
The Class D No. 3-ranked Cougars (10-1) took a 32-25 halftime lead and managed to hold off the No. 4-ranked Bays (7-2) the rest of the way.
Pasanen and Freberg paced SC offensively with 19 points apiece. They also combined for 21 boards - with Freberg snaring 11 - and collected five assists each.
Teammate Tyner chipped in 10 points.
For Brimley, Vesela finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Kerri Chartland contributed 11 markers.
