Prep swimming roundup: MSHS swimmers dominate Ishpeming-Negaunee

NEGAUNEE - Winning all but two of the meet's events, the Marquette Senior High School boys and girls swimming and diving teams swept host Ishpeming-Negaunee on Thursday.

The boys rolled 120-60, while the Redettes posted a 132-50 triumph.

Sam Williams, Nathan Rotundo and Colin McCommons claimed two individual victories apiece for the Redmen. Williams took the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 0.01 seconds, and the 100 backstroke (1:04.00). Rotundo win the 200 individual medley (2:16.57) and 100 butterfly (1:03.97); and McCommons the 50 free (25.28) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.88).

Williams and Rotundo also swam on two winning relays and McCommons one.

For I-N, Cameron Adams claimed the diving title with 164.3 points. Teammate Peter Leppanen also took the 500 free (5:52.90).

For the Redettes, Lyndsey Welch, Logan Vear and Lani Belton were double winners in individual events. Welch captured the 200 free (2:18.0) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.96); Vear the 200 IM (2:37.12) and 100 backstroke (1:15.78); and Belton the 50 free (27.88) and 500 free (6:26.50).

Westwood teams place second

At Ishpeming, Westwood scored 107 points in each meet to finish runner-up to powerful Houghton teams at a high school swimming and diving meet held Thursday.

In the girls meet, the defending Upper Peninsula champion Gremlins scored 140 points to beat the host Patriots by 33 points. Hancock was third with 51.

Westwood won four events, two by Miranda Roose, the 200 IM in 2:50.94 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.57, an event she won by nearly 13 seconds.

Other wins went to Mya Maanika in the diving, though no point total was available, and to Emma Taras in the 100 freestyle by more than three seconds.

On the boys side, Houghton scored 137 points to win by 30 in the two-team meet.

The small Patriots boys team put together wins in six events, including the 200 medley relay with Fredrick Boburka, Andre Materna, Nathen Nelson and Skyler Dakota finishing in 2:07.70, almost seven seconds ahead of the Gremlins' runners-up.

Nelson and Dakota added two individual wins each. Nelson took the 200 IM in 2:35.02 and 100 backstroke in 1:12.60, more than 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Dakota added victories in the 50 free in 25.83 seconds, nearly five seconds up on the field, and 100 free in 58.01, a win of more than four seconds.

In addition, Hunter Roose took the 100 breast in 1:21.40, more than 8 1/2 seconds ahead of the field.
