Prep basketball: No. 1 teams repeat at top of UPSSA polls

January 14, 2014
By Journal Sports Staff (sports@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - All four of last week's No. 1 teams remained undefeated and kept their stranglehold on the top spots in this week's Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls released today by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The quartet - Marquette in Class ABC for both boys and girls, North Central in Class D boys and Forest Park in Class D girls - were all unanimous selections at the top of their respective rankings.

The Marquette girls have the most impressive record at 12-0, while Forest Park's girls are 9-0. Among boys teams, who started their season a week later than the girls, Marquette is 6-0 and North Central 5-0.

Negaunee (7-1) continues to be a consensus No. 2 behind Marquette in the ABC boys ratings, with their only loss to the Redmen. In that same poll, Ishpeming (3-1) and Gwinn (4-1) switched places, the Hematites moving into fifth and the Modeltowners out but receiving votes like Ishpeming did last week.

For the Class D boys, Munising dropped a spot to third despite remaining undefeated at 5-0.

In the girls polls, L'Anse (5-0) stayed in fourth in ABC, while Superior Central (8-1) dropped a place to third in Class D after losing for the first time in 30 regular-season games at Ishpeming last week. Munising (6-2) failed to receive votes this week after garnering two last week.

In Michigan Associated Press rankings also released today, both U.P. Class D leaders are also No. 1 in the state. North Central, however, has the unusual distinction of ascending to the top of the boys poll despite getting no first-place votes. Instead, No. 2 Southfield Christian received four of the five top votes but is four points behind in the voting. Among area girls teams, Marquette is 14th in Class A and Superior Central ninth in Class D, while with the boys, it's Negaunee in fifth in Class C and Munising tied for 10th in Class D.

Some other schools may have received votes, but the AP only names those that received at least 15 votes, meaning each list usually has about 13 or 14 schools on it.

The boys have the most marquee matchups involving area teams during the next week, where a pair of U.P.-ranked teams face off. They began Monday, when Munising topped Carney-Nadeau, followed by Ishpeming at Marquette today, Gwinn at Ishpeming on Wednesday, and Marquette at Escanaba on Friday.

The girls don't get this type of matchup until Saturday, when Superior Central hosts Brimley. Then on Monday, L'Anse plays at Ontonagon.
