MARQUETTE, MI. - Robert (Bob) Joseph Reynolds (aged 56) died in December at 423 Hampton St., Marquette, in the house where he grew up and lived his entire life. He spent decades there caring for his parents, William "Bill" and Arlene Reynolds.
Bob was a wonderful help to his mother in hosting family dinners for the holidays, from cooking and serving to cleaning up afterwards. Bob loved to bake and often had a pan of warm brownies waiting to share with guests who dropped by. In addition to having a sweet tooth, he had a passion for strong coffee and enjoyed sharing a cup with friends.
Bob worked part-time for several years at the NMU University Center in food services while he attended Northern Michigan University. He studied art and pottery, and some of his happiest times were spent at the wheel, throwing beautiful pots. He also combined his keen interest in computers with his artistic talents to create wonderful and unique works of digital art.
For years, he drove his mother and some of her friends to a weekly shopping/luncheon outing at K-mart and would return to fetch them, making sure that they and their loot made it safely home. A dutiful gardener, he tended the family's beautiful gardens and roses.
Bob loved animals; the backyard wildlife must have known him by name. Chipmunks, 'coons, deer, all knew he was good for a treat.
Gentle, kind, and infinitely patient, Bob was a devoted caretaker for his father during his long battle with Alzheimer's. He showed the same dedication, patience and love while caring for his mother for many years when she developed serious health problems, until her death in 2009.
Bob is survived by his older brother Bruce (Kathy) Reynolds of Sussex, Wisconsin, and many relatives in Marquette, including his beloved aunt, Jean Hermanson, who thought the world of Bobby Joe. Other survivors include cousins Janice (Bruce Fletcher) Hermanson and Vicki (William) Lawrence of Marquette and their sons Andy and Danny; Uncle Ray Olson of Marquette; cousins Marilyn (Dennis) Olson of McCall, Idaho, and John Olson of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Bob will be especially missed by his long-time friends Don Roberts and Bobby Glenn Brown of Marquette.
Bob was preceded in death by his infant brother John, his father William M. Reynolds, beloved mother Arlene Alice (nee Brisson) Reynolds and the family dogs, Pickles and Lovis.
A memorial service will be held May 27 at Holy Cross Cemetery. Details will appear in a spring issue of The Mining Journal.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial contributions be made to UPAWS, P.O. Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855; or to Room at the Inn, 347 Rock St., Marquette, MI 49855.
