City Insurance Sentinels Pee Wees go 3-1 against Keweenaw Storm, Calumet Junior Kings

MARQUETTE - A sweep of the Keweenaw Storm on Dec. 29 gave the City Insurance Sentinels Pee Wee AA hockey team of Marquette a 3-1 record in weekend play.

On Dec. 28, the Sentinels split a pair of NIHL games with the host Calumet Junior Kings, losing 5-2 before winning 4-2.

Against the host Storm, City Insurance rolled to a 10-3 victory in the first game behind three goals and an assist by Jakob Peterson.

Luke Beerman added two markers and a helper, while Gaetano Cammarata chipped in a goal and two assists.

Also scoring were Jon Jason with two goals, Brent Kroll with a goal and an assist, and Chris Sliva with a goal.

Also recording assists were Thomas Dunleavy (3), Sean O'Connor (2), Lucas Guertin, Cooper Anderson and Karsten Kamps.

Marquette goaltender Preston Maki made seven saves.

In the afternoon game, Marquette (25-10-4, 10-6-2 NIHL) won 4-0 as netminder as Maki turned aside 11 shots on net.

Beerman notched all four goals, with Cammarata, Kamps, Dunleavy, Anderson and Luke Labre pocketing assists.

In the 5-2 loss to the Calumet squad, Beerman and O'Connor tallied for the Sentinels. Posting assists were Jason and Kamps.

City Insurance goaltender Tyler Bergwall made 31 saves.

In the afternoon contest, scoring for City Insurance were Beerman (2), Peterson and Cammarata.

Collecting assists were Jason and Thomas Dunleavy with two apiece, Beerman and Sliva.

Bergwall made 16 stops.

City Insurance won three of four games playing in the Copper Country on Dec. 21-22.

On Saturday in the Keweenaw, the Sentinels split a series at the NIHL-leading Calumet Junior Kings, falling 5-2 before bouncing back for a 4-2 victory.

In the loss, Beerman and O'Connor scored for Marquette, Jason and Kamps had assists, and Bergwall made 31 saves.

In the victory, Beerman had two goals and an assist as Peterson and Cammarata each had single goals. Teammates Jason and Dunleavy each had two assists while Sliva had one. Bergwall made 16 saves.

On Sunday, Marquette swept the Keweenaw Storm in Houghton, 10-3 and 4-0.

In the opener, Peterson had a three-goal hat trick and an assist, while Beerman added two goals and an assist and Cammarata a goal and two assists. Jason also had two goals, Kroll a goal and an assist and Sliva a goal.

Dunleavy had three assists, O'Connor two and Guertin and Anderson were among those with one as Maki made seven saves in net.

In the second game, Beerman scored all four goals, while Labre was among those with assists and Maki made 11 saves in goal.

Marquette U19 girls win last 4

The Marquette mBank U19 girls swept two-game series on back-to-back weekends after a three-week layoff.

On Dec. 14-15, Marquette swept the Manistique Wildcats on the road, 11-0 and 11-2.

Libby Doney got mBank off to a fast start in the opener, scoring 20 seconds into the game. Taylor Swajanen recorded a three-goal hat trick, while Riley O'Connor and Hailey Peterson added a goal and two assists each. Teammates Shea Blewett and Shelby Gregoire had two goals apiece while McKenzie Masters had an assist.

In Game 2, O'Connor scored four times; Doney had a goal and four assists; Blewett two goals and an assist; Alex Paquette three assists; Kara Salo two assists; and Brooke Swajanen, Lexi Guidebeck, Dana Paquet and Anne Boyer all had goals.

On Dec. 21, Marquette hosted the M&M Thunder at Lakeview Arena and won 4-0 and 4-1.

Between the two games, Amanda Gray scored three goals, Doney two and O'Connor, Blewett and Brooke Swajanen one apiece. Blewett also had two assists with O'Connor, Peterson and Doney one each.
