MARQUETTE - Junior forward Justin Newell turned in a pair of impressive performances last week for the Northern Michigan University men's basketball team and on Monday, he was cited for his efforts by being named the GLIAC North Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Newell led the Wildcats to their first GLIAC wins of the season. He scored a career-high 27 points in a 72-57 win over Tiffin on Thursday before leading NMU past Ohio Dominican, 75-52, with a team-high 16 points on Saturday.
Against Tiffin, Newell went 8-of-15 from the field - 4-of-6 from 3-point range - and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
He also recorded five rebounds, a steal and an assist in 35 minutes of action.
Against Ohio Dominican, Newell went 5-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-6 triples, and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.
He added five rebounds and an assist in 21 minutes of play.
Newell leads NMU on offense, averaging 14.1 points per game and shooting 44.7 percent from 3-point range.
The Wildcats return to action on the road at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Ashland.
