Marquette General will be well served by Banos selection

Where we stand

January 5, 2014
The Mining Journal

We'd like to join others in the community in welcoming Ed Banos to his new role as chief executive officer at Marquette General Hospital. Banos -who has been president and chief operating officer at Marquette General since May- became the hospital's CEO effective Wednesday. Banos will also continue as hospital president.

In early October, MGH president Gary Muller announced he would retire from his top leadership role at the hospital effective Dec. 31. Muller will continue as president and CEO of Superior Health Partners -an affiliation of nine Upper Peninsula hospitals and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan- until Feb. 28, when he will retire fully.

Banos said Muller -who came to MGH in November 2007- has been a great mentor.

We think the two men having worked together over the past several months will help facilitate a smooth transition in the leadership role at the hospital.

Banos is an experienced administrator who worked previously at medical facilities in Texas, Pennsylvania and Florida.

"I am excited about the opportunity to lead MGH into the future," Banos said. "We have a great team of employees, physicians and volunteers, and I look forward to working with them to continue strengthening our hospital and growing our services to meet the healthcare needs of residents of the Upper Peninsula."

Banos has more than 25 years of experience in hospital administration and executive roles for healthcare organizations. He came to MGH after serving as system president and CEO for Good Shepherd Health System in Longview, Texas. Before that, he served as COO for Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Penn. and as CEO at North Shore Medical Center in Miami, Fla.

We join Duke LifePoint and Marquette General Hospital Board of Directors officials in welcoming Banos and wishing him all the best in his new job.

Congratulations.
