TRAVERSE CITY - The Marquette Senior High School basketball teams completed a weekend sweep in Traverse City on Saturday as both boys and girls teams won at TC West High School.
Marquette boys 53, TC West 39
The Redmen (5-0) protected a 32-27 lead entering the fourth quarter by making 17 of 19 free throws in the final period.
"We executed better in the first half than we did on Friday," MSHS coach Brad Nelson said. "Defense and free throws, especially on the road, wins games for you."
Brad Brow led the shooting parade at the line in the fourth, making 6 of 6 free throws to finish with 10 points. Teammate Andy Nyquist led scorers with 11 points, while junior Vejas Grazulis also had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
"We'll take a lot out of this weekend, since we were playing against a couple of possible district (tournament) opponents," Nelson said.
Stephen Sheppard led TCW with 12 points.
The Redmen lost the JV game by two points, but no score was available.
Marquette's next game is at home against Iron Mountain on Monday, Jan. 6.
Marquette 42, TC West 16
The Redettes bumped their record to 10-0 by racing to a 40-3 lead halfway through the fourth quarter.
"It was 5-0 for a good part of the first quarter even though we made five or six real good plays that we just didn't finish," MSHS coach Ben Smith said.
Marquette held leads of 7-0, 15-3 and 32-3 at the end of each of the first three quarters as junior Hunter Viitala scored 14 points, pulled down five rebounds and made six steals.
No other Redette had more than six points, though Kirsten Iwanski had a team-high eight rebounds and Madalyne Connon seven steals.
Marquette also won the JV game, 68-36.
Next up for MSHS is a home game against Escanaba on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
