New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is this week and to many people that means staying out at bar until 4 a.m., watching a ball drop on TV or in person or making a new resolution and trying to stick with it this year. On any other year to me that would be spot on, but this year it means two days of outdoor hockey in Detroit and Ann Arbor.
In August, I got tickets to the Alumni Showdown games and the Winter Classic for my dad as his Christmas and birthday present. My dad is the one who got me into hockey and I grew up watching some of the greats play in Detroit for the Red Wings. Tuesday will be all about watching some of those great players again as well as watching some players I would have never seen play otherwise.
My dad seems pretty excited about the games. He even got a new Bob Probert jersey to wear. I on the other hand will be wearing my Franzen jersey, seeing as my signed Sergei Fedorov jersey is a child's small.
Now we don't have the greatest seats that you could get, but I think we'll be able to see all the games just fine. I'm just excited to be able to spend two days watching history be made in hockey outside with my dad. He's helped me out a lot over the years, especially when it came to my cars, and I thought this would be a great way to pay him back and a great way to spend the day with him.
I will probably be a little sad that night because this is the first time in a long time that I will be spending New Year's away from the city I now call home. But I'm sure if my older brother isn't too mad at me for not taking him too, I'll manage. Here's hoping it's not too cold in Detroit and Ann Arbor and that my dad has an amazing time.
