Big Water Community Sing Jan. 5

MARQUETTE - The Big Water Community Sing will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 5 in the community room of the Peter White Public Library, Marquette.

Song leader Corinne Rockow leads this casual vocal jam session for folks of all ages and abilities.

The first half hour is devoted to energetic and fun music for young children. Bring a copy of Rise Up Singing, if you have it, or any other vocal music to share as a group.

All ages are welcome for this monthly gathering.

Breakfast Buffet at Gwinn VFW

GWINN - Gwinn VFW Post 5670 along with Men's Auxiliary will have a Breakfast Buffet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 5.

Adults are $8 and children under 10 are $5.

Breakfast includes: Pancakes, french toast, scrambled eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, fruit, bacon, sausage, coffee, juice and milk.

Basic fitness class on Jan. 11

MARQUETTE - The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present a basic fitness class from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at Superior Fitness, 1310 S. Front Street, Marquette.

Owner and personal trainer Aaron Clemins will cover simple techniques to increase physical activity and health.

Physical inactivity is one of the strongest predictors of morbidity and mortality.

Participants should bring proper shoes for movement.

This event is free for NCLL members and $5 for non-members. Pre-register by Jan. 6, by calling 227-2979.

Ishpeming school of choice apps

ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming Public School District is accepting new non-resident schools of choice applications for the second semester for grades Young 5's through grade 12.

Students must be residing with the Marquette-Alger RESA.

Applications are available from Jan. 6, through Jan. 24, at the Birchview School, Superintendent?s Office or District website: www.ishpemingschools.com.

Applications must be received no later than Jan. 24.

Students enrolled for the first semester do not need a new application.

State Employee Retirees to meet

ESCANABA - The State Employee Retirees Association Upper Peninsula Chapter #16 will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the state office building, 305 Ludington St., Escanaba.

A Seminar on the topic Elder Law will be presented by Ms. Kim Winokur, JD, L.M.M., Senior Associate of the Law Firm Anderson Associates, P.C. of Marquette. Topics being presented include: Elder Law, Disability Rights, Probate and Estate Planning, Living Trust, Veterans Benefits, Medical and Legal Decisions, Advance Directives, etc.

'This Is It' to be screened Jan. 6

MARQUETTE - DocuMonday presents the film "This Is It" at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 in the community room of the Peter White Public Library, Marquette.

A multiple award winner and nominee, this documentary is a compilation of interviews, rehearsals and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepared for his series of sold-out shows in London.

Captured on film are Jackson's rehearsals for the concert scheduled to start on July 13, 2009, but canceled due to his death eighteen days prior on June 25. It is the last film Jackson starred in.

None of this footage was originally intended for release, but after Jackson's death it was agreed that the film be made.

"This Is It" was released in 2009, is rated PG and runs for 111 minutes.

There is no admission charge thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of the Peter White Public Library.

One-on-one computer classes

MARQUETTE - One-on-one computer classes will be starting Jan. 7 at the Peter White Public Library, Marquette.

Students will be learning basic computer skills like Word processing, Internet skills: searching, e-mail, printing, downloading and how to use the Foundation Center Collection for grant writing.

Classes will be at 2 p.m. Tuesdays; at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 7 p.m. Wednesdays; and at 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. Thursdays.

Each class is 30-60 minutes, self-paced, and held in the Reference Area on the 2nd floor.

'Walking the Way of St. James'

MARQUETTE - Probus Superiorland will meet at 11 a.m., Jan. 7 at the Bonanza Restaurant, Marquette.

Kathy Geier will speak on "Walking the Way of St. James," a pilgrimage she traveled in Spain.

Kathy Peters displayed in January

MARQUETTE - Kathy Peters is the January Main Gallery exhibit for The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center, Marquette.

Peters, a Lake Superior Art Association member, will exhibit winter scene inspired quilts created over the past 26 years including Presque Isle's moose, sled dog races, ice fishing, saunas and the Hyakutaki comet.

The new SmallWorks Gallery will feature Corbin Lutz. Lutz, also a LSAA member, studied under renowned watercolor artist, Nita Engle. Lutz paints primarily with watercolors and acrylics.

Both exhibits will be displayed from Jan. 7 through Feb. 1. There will be an opening reception for both artists from 6 p.m. to 8p.m. on Jan. 9. Refreshments will be available.

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center is located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

Superior Central school of choice

EBEN JUNCTION - The Superior Central School District is accepting new non-resident schools of choice applications for the 2013-2014 school year for grades K through 12.

Applications are available at the high school office and at the District's website: www.superiorcentralschools.org.
