MARQUETTE, MI. - Marie J. Pellinen, 91, formerly of 1901 Neidhart Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday morning, December 24, 2013, at the Norlite Nursing Center, surrounded by her loving family.
A lifelong Marquette resident, Marie was born July 14, 1922 in Marquette, a daughter of Leo and Lucille (Nadeau) Fregeole, and was a 1941 graduate of the Graveraet High School.
On December 12, 1942 she married Carl Y. Pellinen at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marquette. Throughout the years, Marie worked as a sales clerk at the former Tonella & Rupp Furniture Store for nine years and then Merrick's Ben Franklin Store for nine years, retiring to care and spend time with her grandchildren.
Marie lived for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; both treasuring and spoiling them. Her favorite times were family gatherings where she had all her family together. She was an avid reader of mysteries and worked crossword puzzle books faster than you could bring them to her.
She loved Jeopardy (and don't challenge her on an answer; you'd lose). She thoroughly enjoyed playing Wheel of Fortune on the Kindle with her great-grandson, Nic. She enjoyed trips to the casino with best friends, Pete and Theresa Tousignant, and Jackie. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and was a member of the altar society and choir for many years.
During her years at Norlite, Marie made many friends. She attended most of the activities; bingo being a favorite. She also enjoyed her cooking group, crafts, Carol Burnett shows, Keyboard Annie, and all the other musical entertainment. Her mind was sharp and so was her wit. She enjoyed a good joke as well as good conversation. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A loving mother, proud grandmother, and sister, she is survived by her daughter, Gail (Stephen) Swenor of Marquette; a son, Carl (Linda) Pellinen Jr of Oviedo, FL; grandchildren, Michelle (Mike) Barry and Scott (Sheila) Swenor; four great-grandchildren, Samantha and Nicholas Swenor, and Rachel and Jessica Barry; a sister, Virginia Tyrrell of Davenport, FL; a brother, Howard (Joan) Fregeole of Marquette; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Y. Pellinen on December 28, 2000; and a brother, Francis Fregeole.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Michael Catholic Church on Monday, December 30, beginning at 10:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon with Rev. Larry Van Damme, pastor, as celebrant. Marie's great-grandchildren will serve as escorts.
A reception will follow in the Parish Center. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring. "God bless our mother, for she was the heart of our family."
