Ishpeming wins 4 of 5 matches at Munising Christmas Super Dual

MARQUETTE - Four Marquette Senior High School wrestlers picked up top-seven places at the 20-school Marquette Challenge high school wrestling tournament on Saturday.

The tournament was wrapping up after Mining Journal deadline on Saturday night with schools not only from the Upper Peninsula, but also the Lower Peninsula and Wisconsin participating.

Redmen senior Hunter Moore placed fifth at 130 pounds, getting three pins and a technical fall in the four matches that he won. He chalked up pins at 1:21 on sophomore Zack Platteborze of Gwinn, at 2:36 on senior Trevor Swanson of Westwood and 49 seconds on freshman Mason Priest of downstate Grandville.

He also had a 15-0 technical fall in a match called at 4:56 against Jeromy Price of Mason.

Moore was knocked out of the winner's bracket in his second match, a narrow 6-4 loss to Tyler Brewer of Comstock Park. Brewer finished third in the division.

Freshman Beau Caster of Marquette placed sixth at 135 pounds with pins at 52 and 56 seconds and an 11-7 win before losing an 11-6 decision to Cameron Urban of Rogers City in the fifth-place match.

Gwinn junior Alex Anderson took sixth at 112 pounds as he pinned Cody Moe of Comstock and won a 15-2 decision over freshman Denham Miron of Escanaba. Anderson went on to be pinned by Gage Major of Roscommon in the fifth-place match.

Marquette seniors Brian Helmer and Jackson Mahler took seventh places at 152 and 189 pounds, respectively. Helmer went 2-2 with a pin at 2:49 of Josh Hooker of Leroy Pine River and a technical fall over Nate Yates of Sparta, 18-2. Mahler was 1-2 with a 3-1 win over Leonard Connor of Grandville.

At 130, Swanson won his first consolation bracket match, beating Matt Kempher of Gaylord 4-2, while Negaunee senior Mike Luoma won at the same point over Cameron Collier of St. Ignace, 14-9.

At 171, senior Tyler Villeneuve of Westwood also won his first consolation match with a pin of Forest Madagame of Gaylord at 4:33.

Ishpeming wins 4 of 5

At the Munising Christmas Super Dual on Saturday afternoon, Ishpeming won four of five matches to improve to 5-2.

Among the Hematites' wins was a 54-21 victory over Manistique, which came two weeks after the Hematites lost to the Emeralds, 39-36.

"It's just been a matter of time for our kids to get in shape and move into their proper weight classes," Ishpeming coach Tim Hares said.

The Hematites also defeated Newberry, 54-15, the host Mustangs, 45-27, and Rudyard, 54-30, while they lost to Sault Ste. Marie, 62-24.

Three Ishpeming juniors posted perfect 5-0 records Saturday - Emily Myers at 103 pounds, who had two pins among her victories; Johnathan Willey at 135 pounds, with three pins; and Nate Meyer at 160 pounds, also with three pins.

Meanwhile, senior Jordan Tousignant was 4-1 at 152 pounds, only losing to past Upper Peninsula champion Steve Kymes of Sault Ste. Marie. Freshman Darren Guchin at 130 pounds was also 4-1.

Munising was reported to have compiled a 3-2 record on Saturday, defeating Rudyard, Newberry and Manistique.

Ishpeming's next action is at the Elks Tournament in Escanaba on Saturday, Jan. 4.
