Killer Whales’ Vanderschaaf wins race

BROWN DEER, Wis. - Colin Vanderschaaf captured the 25-yard freestyle at the annual TYR YMCA Finalist Meet held at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis., recently.

Swimming for the YMCA of Marquette County Killer Whales, Vanderschaaf, 8, covered the distance in 15.41 seconds.

He also set three team records en route to second place finishes in the 50 freestyle (33.53), 25 breaststroke (21.26) and 100 individual medley (1:27.53).

In addition, Vanderschaaf medaled in the 25 backstroke (20.18) and placed fourth in the 25 butterfly (18.73).

Carson Vanderschaaf, also 8, finished fifth in the 100 IM (1:35.46) and sixth in the 25 breaststroke (22.30), 25 butterfly (20.24) and 25 freestyle (16.87).

Also earning top six finishes at the meet was Erin Vanderschaaf, 10. She nabbed fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:24.46), fifth in the 50 backstroke (38.71) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:56.19).

The Killer Whales will be hosting a "Try us out" week Jan. 6 for any youths interested in learning more about competitive swimming.
