Family struggles after losing everything in fire

Where we stand

December 21, 2013
The Mining Journal

During the Christmas holidays, we fully realize there's no dearth of absolutely wonderful causes to donate to.

Indeed, here at The Mining Journal we have spend much of the past month asking readers to donate to the annual Cheer Club, which collects toys, clothing, money and food for needy families in the area.

The Salvation Army offices in Marquette and Ishpeming coordinate this wonderful program, which wrapped up for the season Friday.

But all of that said, another cause has surfaced that we'd like area residents to consider: A family in Alger County lost its home and all of its possessions in a devastating fire Thursday morning.

Five members of the McArthur family sustained injuries, two serious enough to require hospitalization.

This family, less that a week before Christmas, has been left with absolutely nothing. The list of items needed is long, and starts with the basics: clothing, household items and such.

Donations are being accepted at the Alger County Sheriff's Office at 101 E. Varnum St., in Munising Call 387-4444 for more information.
